On Sunday we held our first TrailFest Training day on navigation for runners. It was a cold and foggy day, but we were warmed with hot drinks and chats over lunch and some of Gary’s special ‘Contour Cake’ (used to demonstrate contour lines – you had to be there!).
We asked Gary to share his suggestions for books, apps and maps that he talked about and used on the day.
We’re planning to hold future TrailFest Training days in 2017, so keep an eye on our social media for announcements of training and dates. Over to you Gary!
That was a chilly session that we endured on Sunday. But it will be worth it! Think of the joy and accomplishment of your bigger picture ahead! During the day we discussed a few apps and books. Here are some useful links;
- For Grid References and Bearings (Direction): https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/os-locate
- Mapping for Computer and SmartPhone that also handshakes between the two: https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/os-maps-mobile.html
- Complimentary to OS Maps is: https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/mapfinder
Other non-OS and well liked Apps are
- and http://outdoorsgps.com/
We also mentioned web browser apps that can switch between Mapping and Aerial Photography. These are OS Maps listed above, and Bing … which is far better than Google Maps for this reason.
‘Appy’ New Adventures to you all!
